Follow these virtual class etiquette tips to make our class more productive and enjoyable for all participants.
- Be on time. When we meet in real time, I will take attendance at the beginning of the class. Please make sure you have Zoom installed and ready to go 15 minutes before class starts. I'll be available in Zoom 5 minutes ahead of each class and available for questions and chat. Join if you can!
- Be available for the duration of the class. Unless specified, you need to be on Zoom during class session. Make sure you have a stable internet connection during your course hours.
- Find a quiet place for the duration of class. Mute notifications and strive to keep your phone or other devices off or away during live class sessions. Close other tabs and windows. Be present and engaged.
- Be aware of your audio settings. Headphones recommended to reduce background noise, make a habit of muting your mic when you’re not speaking.
- Video: Please use video if and when you feel comfortable doing so and your internet allows.
- Be aware of your video setting when you do turn it on. Find a clean, school-appropriate background before the session starts. It's good to sit against a wall so your roommates/family members don't walk past the screen or you don’t reveal anything private in front of your teacher/classmates.
- Please practice courteous and respectful non-verbal communication with all members of the class. Keep eye contact, hand gestures, facial expressions, and body language polite and focused.
- Dress appropriately. Dress as if you're going to school, especially pants. You never know if you are going to get up for a cup of water.
- Plug your laptop in. The battery can affect video quality or drain your laptop quickly. If you have tech issues, try calling in instead and send me a note letting me know you had to switch to audio only.
- Minimize distraction. Please don't carry on side conversations with people next to you, have TV/music on in the background, or browse social media during class sessions. Speak to housemates about limiting interruptions and noise during class time.
- Restart your computer or close softwares you're not using while on Zoom. Video conferences may eat up a lot of your laptop resources, make sure you don't have too many tabs or software running in the background.
- Use built-in chat for questions. To signal our/my attention in a large group setting, use the ‘Raise Hand’ function on Zoom or drop questions into the chat function. I will check these periodically throughout the class.
